讲座摘要

Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma process that converts energy stored in magnetic fields to plasma energy. While the energy conversion occurs over multiple scales, magnetic reconnection is enabled by the demagnetized electron dynamics within the electron diffusion region (EDR) of the thickness of the electron inertia length or gyroradius. Fundamental for the change of magnetic topology, required for the energy release, is the reconnection electric field. In non-collisional plasma, the electrons often act as efficient charge carriers, and are often able to cancel any electric field that arise. In this talk, with the aid of satellite data from the Magnetospecric MultuSale mission, and fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations, we discuss the electron dynamics inside the electron diffusion region, and take a look at some phase-space properties that either acts to sustain, or cancel, the reconnection electric field.

Dr. Cecilia Norgren graduated from the University of Uppsala, Uppsala, Sweden in 2011. In 2017, she received her PhD degree in Space Physics at the Swedish Insitute of Space Physics, in Uppsala, Sweden. From 2017 to 2023, she worked as a post-doc and researcher at the University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway. In 2023, she was again employed as a researcher at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics. Using satellite data from the Cluster and Magnetospheric MultiScale mission coupled with particle-in-cell simulations, she investigates the kinetic plasma dynamics associated with thin boundary layers in space, for example current sheets, with a particular focus on magnetic reconnection. She also focuses on wave-particle interactions and plasma acceleration and heating.
